The 670 million mobile users in India are celebrating Black Friday shopping this year! This is because of the launch of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) that has recently been rolled out in one state, Haryana.

The service will shortly be introduced in a phased manner across the rest of the country. The implementation has already been postponed three times since the operators were not geared up with the infrastructure required for it.

MNP will allow mobile users to retain their phone numbers when they switch between different service providers as well as different mobile technologies such as CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications).
